ALYS BEACH

by gregory davalos

A few weeks ago I took an incredible trip down south to the ultra luxe Alys Beach Resort in Florida. Although I was in town for work, the white sand beaches and emerald water paired with architecture reminiscent of Santorini, made it physically impossible to not feel like I was on vacation during my stay.

It was my first time visiting the south and I was blown away by it's humid beauty and refreshing slow pace. I got to experience real southern hospitality first hand, which was serious culture shock at first. I've always believed in the kindness of strangers, but growing up in LA can make you a little jaded. It took me a couple days to adjust to everyone asking me how I was and the fresh baked cookies + hand written notes in my room every night.

Packing for the trip was a little tricky as it's literally a humid paradise, so I went straight to  Reiss and picked up a few airy cotton shirts and light weight slacks.  Their Summer 14 collection is a capsule of quentesential relaxed summer styles that range from elevated basics and short sleeve button downs to their signature tailored trousers in summer friendly fabrics and colors--perfect for a few days by the beach!

I'm not sure when I'll be returning to this this untapped paradise, but it won't be long. Once you get a taste of that warm water and dig your toes into the sugary white sands of Alys Beach it's very difficult to imagine life without it.

OLD HOLLYWOOD

by gregory davalos

Growing up in LA has made me the most jaded human being alive, and I haven't decided if that is good or bad. I probably sound like a royal douche bag mouthing off about how life in Hollywood doesn't tickle my fancy the way it used to, but it's hard to keep that flame burning after 24 years in the same zip code.

I often fantasize about what Hollywood was like during the golden era of film. When the industry wasn't about celebrity, but creating art. Creating films that told an actual story and took audiences out of reality and into a fictional wonderland. When icons like Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly roamed the boulevard and called this place home.

Playing on this theme, I decided to pay a quick visit to Charlie Chaplin's former apartment complex for a quick shoot. Call me hippy dippy, but you sincerely feel an energy when you walk through the courtyard of quaint bungalows. Charlie purchased the complex in 1936 and issued a bungalow to each of his friends, sweet deal right?

While present Hollywood is (literally) not what it used to be, you can't help but be fascinated by the locations these iconic souls called home in the past.

One of the most glorious things about living in Los Angeles is notably the weather. I always point out to people visiting from out of town that LA is one of the few places where you can leave work and have dinner and drinks by the pool year around. In other parts of the United States people have to leave work, throw a parka on, walk in the snow, hop on a train and wake up and do it the next day. Perhaps this is why people in la are seemingly always happy?

One of my absolute favorite after work destinations in LA is Hotel Wilshire by Kimpton Hotels.  Situated on the west side of Beverly Hills, the unassuming hotel has an amazing rooftop that delivers on sweeping views of Hollywood without the pretentious Hollywood rooftop attitude. I'm a serious creature of habit so the Roof on Wilshire often hosts lunch/dinner meetings, casual pre-games before a night out and even dates!

THE GIFT KEEP THAT KEEPS GIVING: LA FASHION DIGITAL 2014

by gregory davalos

I turned 24 today and have spent a majority of my birthday reflecting on where i've been and where i'm going. 23 was very good to me primarily because of this blog! It has expanded from a silly personal style blog  to a full fledge lifestyle website that covers mens fashion, travel, food and nightlife. I owe a lot the internet/ digital space and am always hungry to absorb information pertaining to it.

For my birthday this year my boss, Cheyann Benedict, presented me with two tickets to the Fashion Digital Los Angeles Conference. There is no gift better than an education! The team at LAFD did a superior job selecting their speakers and keynote topics to ensure that attendee's received digital marketing insight across the board. From social engagement to customer acquisition and retention strategies, I left the conference today feeling so inspired ! I can't wait to see what the future has in store. In the mean time--i'm going to party like it's my birthday. xo
